In the Name of God, Amen
Be it known to all who shall see or hear this public instrument: In the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and twenty-six, on the twenty-eighth day of May, at about eleven o’clock at night, before me, Johannes Blenefeld, bookbinder and sworn clerk of Stellenbosch, and in the presence of the undersigned witnesses, personally appeared the burgher of Stellenbosch, Hendrik Loots, a native of Munsterland, aged sixty-seven years, and Lisbeth Jansz, born at the Cape of Good Hope, his lawful wife, both well known to me.
The testators, lying sick in bed yet of sound mind, memory, and judgment, fully capable as appeared to us and the witnesses, declared that—considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the hour when it may please Almighty God to call them hence—they did not wish to leave this temporal life without first disposing of their temporal estate. Therefore, of their own free will and deliberate intent, they made, ordained, and declared this, their last will and testament, as follows:
Firstly, they commend their immortal souls into the hands of Almighty God, their Creator and Redeemer, and their bodies to the earth, to be buried in a Christian manner according to local custom, without pomp or display.
Secondly, concerning such temporal goods as they, the testators, through the blessing of God, are now possessed of or may hereafter acquire, they declare and appoint as their sole and universal heirs, without distinction of sex or descent, their children lawfully begotten in marriage, to inherit equally, share and share alike, so that none may claim a larger portion than the other. Should any of their children predecease them, leaving lawful descendants, such descendants shall inherit, per stirpes, the share their parent would have taken, and in equal parts. Should there be no such descendants, then the inheritance shall accrue to the surviving children, or to their descendants, as hereinbefore stipulated, without any exclusion.

“This was thus passed at Stellenbosch in the presence of Joost Hendrik van Blerven and Adam Krause, as credible witnesses, who together with the appearers and me, the secretary, have signed the original of this document.
