HURTER Johann Wilhelm
HURTER Johann Wilhelm born on 22 September 1722 in Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. He was the son of the Germans Adam HURTER and Catharina Elizabeth KREMERS. The surname means “person in a woven fence” He arrived in Cape Town in 1750 and worked as a gardener. He married Barbara HAUK in 1755. She was the daughter of Hans Jürgen HAUK and Aletta de NIJS.

Johann Wilhelm held various alcohol licences. He was involved in various brewing deals, and in the alcohol retail business. All of this came from his mother in law Aletta de NIJS. He became wealthy through his business connections.He had very strong ties to the Lutheran church in Cape Town. He died in Cape Town on 20 April 1783.
